The Sufi poet, Rumi wrote,
Listen to this story:
When the soul left the body
it was stopped by God at heaven’s gate:
“Alas! You have returned just as you left.
Life is a blessing of opportunity.
Where are the bumps and scratches
left by the journey?”
How often I’ve groused about the ‘unfairness’ of life. How I’ve wanted (and expected) my life to be easier than it is. I’ve somehow believed that if I was a good person and did the ‘right’ things that life would be smooth – SHOULD be smooth.
And when the unfortunate circumstances of my life, the disappointments, the hurts, the tragedies, struck, I believed I’d done something wrong.
What a gift to be reminded that life isn’t meant to be smooth sailing the entire way. That the bumps and bruises aren’t meant to be suffered over, but to draw me closer to the One.
